How to Make a Penny Rug Glass Coaster

By: Sharon L. Neth

Things you will need for this project:

Wool scraps
Black Wool
Basic sewing supplies
Recycled box cardboard
Mug
Pencil

Step 1

Take a glass that you have and that you use often and draw a pattern from it on a piece of used cardboard. Add 1/2" to the drawn circle around the circumference of the circle. Cut out the pattern. Next, I like to cut out an smaller inner circle to applique inside in the larger circle. So by your preference and style decide how big you want the inner circle and then cut out that pattern.

Step 2

Felt and use! Cut out fabric in the shape that you like. Here in the picture, I like to use a star pattern you might want to make a heart design instead. Then using the button hole stitch, I applique the star onto the circle. Try to make the stitches evenly spaces as best as you can so that you have consistency within your work. Now if you love the Primitive look, you might want to try uneven stitching in your pattern but fair warning, once you start the pattern, you need to stitch it consistently throughout the whole piece to make it unified looking.

Step 3

Family will enjoy Once the coaster is completed, back the coaster with felt and buttonhole stitch all the way around the coaster and tie off. To make a set of coasters, make 4-6 coasters of the same pattern and you have a wonderful gift for any person in your family!

* Try a Country style theme for your coasters. Let's say cowboy hat, cows, or maybe a sheep. * To apply a Classical theme to the coasters, try a book symbol, musical note symbol, favorite Pianist like Mozart portrait.
