If you have thoughts of starting a book collection but you are unsure of where you would like to begin, I have a suggestion for you. Consider a collection of former best selling books. Your collection would span several genres and be fun to research. You might think that it would be an easy task because if the book was a bestseller there should be easily attainable copies. Your assumption would be partially correct. There will be many copies available but you should try to purchase the book that was from the first publisher and in it's first printing as it will have the most value. There are many articles available on the Internet to help you to know how to determine a First Edition/First Print. In 1958, fifty years ago, Dr. Zhivago was the bestselling book of the year. Boris Pasternak’s novel fits both in historical fiction and as romance novel taking place during the Russian Revolution of 1917 and the Russian Civil War during 1918-1920. It outlines the struggle of a man whose life is dramatically changed and torn apart by forces beyond his control. There was much controversy with the Soviet Union when Pasternak was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in Literature partly for his novel. Pasternak rejected the award so as not to cause unrest in his homeland. The book was made into a movie in 1965. A moving story of love and war is a classic that everyone should read. This might be a nice book to begin your collection with. Perhaps you would like to start your collection with one of the best selling books from the year you were born, but how would you find out what those books would be? I would recommend doing a search with the criteria being: best selling books from (the year of your birth).
